The president's long-time personal aide John McEntee has been fired by the White House, according to USA media.

John McEntee was canned over issues with his security clearance and because he's now under investigation by the Department of Homeland Security for serious financial crimes, sources told CNN.

John McEntee, who serves as body man and personal aide to President Donald Trump, has been dismissed due to a security issue.

The Wall Street Journal first reported Mr McEntee's sacking, citing a security issue. McEntee joined the president's small team three years ago during the earliest days of the campaign.

Trump's campaign hired him soon after he was sacked from his White House job. The role meant McEntee was almost constantly at the President's side.

McEntee's departure was overshadowed by the news that Trump fired Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and nominated CIA Director Mike Pompeo to replace him. In particular, WSJ indicated there was an issue with his security clearance. Shortly after his announced firing, he was hired by the Trump campaign - which is becoming a landing place for numerous former Trump hands who are unwilling or unable to work in the White House. The alleged crimes are said to not be related to Trump. Another of his originals, Communications Director Hope Hicks, resigned February 28.

McEntee, who went by Johnny as UConn's starting quarterback in 2011, was working at Fox News after graduation when he joined Trump's campaign as a volunteer and quickly got hired to a full-time position in August 2015.
