Canada provincial party elects new leader months before polls

Party president Jag Badwal announced the results seven hours later than scheduled, saying the former Toronto city councillor had narrowly eked out a win over former provincial legislator Christine Elliott on the third ballot.

But Ford had brushed off her allegations, saying he was working on restoring unity within the party as it works to topple Liberal Premier Kathleen Wynne's government in a spring general election. To help make sure that a candidate could win votes across Ontario the party allocated 100 points to each of the province's 124 ridings.

McNaughton, who co-chaired candidate Caroline Mulroney's campaign, says she still has a chance of being an MPP.

"I'm prepared to support him moving into the June election and I look forward to speaking to him on the issues", Romano told The Sault Star in a telephone interview. If a race is close, count the ballots again.

"Obviously, I would have preferred Christine (Elliott)".

Meanwhile, Mulroney - the only leadership hopeful already declared a candidate in a riding - has presented herself as a fresh face, and Granic Allen has emphasized her ties to the party's grassroots.

"I trust what she's going on".

"The billions in cuts they are promising and the divisive social conservative policies they are championing will hurt Ontario's economy and change our province for the worse".

In a statement released Sunday afternoon, Hartley Lefton, who chaired the party's leadership election organizing committee, said the party will "be stronger than ever" under Ford's leadership.

Supporters wait in the main hall as confusion continues over the result of the Ontario PC Leadership announcement in Markham, Ont., on Saturday, March 10, 2018.

"Yesterday, following the tabulation of ballots, a challenge regarding allocation of electoral votes was heard by the appeals board and the issue was extensively investigated by the chief electoral officer and the election team".

Asked what he likes about Ford, Walker said Ford is a successful businessman who wants the best for Ontario.

As relatively mild as he was when speaking publicly about his opponents during this leadership campaign, his past form suggests he will try to channel voters' dislike of Ms. Wynne in a much harsher tone than the other leadership candidates would have.

It took significantly longer than expected, but alas, the Ontario Progressive Conservative Party has a new leader.

"That is why I entered this race", Elliott said.

Saturday's delays also prompted criticism. "The clear balance is in favour of the [party]". That made it even more important that this executive running this election had to be ideal. "Unfortunately the thing blew apart today".

The race was prompted by former leader Patrick Brown's resignation on January 25 after two women accused him of sexual misconduct.

Brown tweeted his congratulations to Ford on his victory. We must come together and defeat [Ontario Premier] Kathleen Wynne in the next election.

February 5: Toronto lawyer Caroline Mulroney, daughter of former prime minister Brian Mulroney, ends days of speculation by announcing her candidacy for party leader.

February 21: Brown's quest to regain the Tory leadership is given the green light after the party nomination committee gives him a stamp of approval for a run in the spring election.

The leadership race itself stirred strife and forced party brass to defend their decisions on a number of fronts.
