26 wedding guests perish in western India truck accident

The accident took place near Ranghola on Rajkot-Bhavnagar state highway. Other injured victims were rushed to hospital.

Authorities say it was carrying 60 wedding guests, mostly women and children. The reports suggest that the following tragedy took place on Tuesday morning.

The accident happened in Bhavnagar district about 200 kilometres (125 miles) from the state capital Ahmedabad.

Eyewitnesses say the truck skidded into the opposite lane as it tried to overtake another vehicle.

"Around 60 persons were travelling in the truck and most victims are women and children", Gujarat police inspector KJ Kadapda told AFP.

According to latest available government data, 150,785 people died in road accidents in India in 2016, averaging 413 deaths a day.

The injured have been rushed to a local hospital and surely it is going to hurt you all for sure.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, too, expressed his concern for the injured and condolences for those who lost their lives in the accident. The accident was extremely unfortunate and anguishing.

The rescue operations were primarily carried out by the villagers of Ranghola. Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani has ordered an inquiry and announced an ex gratia of Rs 4 lakh to the kin of each of the deceased.

The Chief Minister also assured medical treatment for the injured.
