Saudi crown prince visits Egypt

On Friday, Hariri and the Crown Prince appeared in a selfie posted on the former's personal Twitter account, apparently signalling relations have been normalized following last year's freakish sequence of events around Hariri's resignation.

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman will hold a first-ever meeting on Monday with Egypt's Coptic Pope Tawadros II during his visit to Cairo, according to a church spokesman.

The head of Prince Mohammed's office, Bader al-Asaker, tweeted that the prince's plane was escorted by Egyptian fighter jets when it entered its air space.

It is hoped the visit will strengthen relations between the two countries, as well as see discussion between the two leaders on a number of regional and global issues, and consolidating joint Arab cooperation.

Saudi Arabia has given generous financial and political support to el-Sissi since he led the 2013 military ouster of Islamist president Mohammed Morsi.

Sisi said the security of Gulf countries is closely related to Egypt's national security.

They also agreed on continuing to work together to counter regional interventions and attempts to sow division and rifts among the region's countries.

Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman confirmed his keenness on making his first foreign trip since becoming crown prince to Egypt, given the profound and robust close relations that bind Egypt and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, in addition to their common history and shared destiny.

In 2015, during a visit by King Salman to Cairo, the two countries agreed on the transfer of two Red Sea islands to Saudi Arabia, sparking rare protests in Egypt.

Egypt is a member of a Saudi-led coalition fighting Iranian-backed Shiite rebels in Yemen.
