By launching the normalization process of relations with Turkey, Armenia was fully aware of the possible further developments, foreign minister Edward Nalbandian told a Security Council session after president Serzh Sargsyan scrapped the protocols. The president was previously selected through a direct popular vote by the public. After his inauguration, the levers of power will be transferred to the prime minister, as the result of a 2015 constitutional referendum that also gave lawmakers rather than voters the power to elect the head of state.

"Dear Mr. Sarkissian, I sincerely congratulate you on your election as Armenia's President".

Sarkissian was nominated by the ruling Republican Party of Armenia on January 11, at which time he said that he would accept the nomination only after meeting with a broad range of political, civic leaders, as well as the population. This, of course, is a very important event in the life of our people and the state, and, of course, is a very important milestone on the way to the establishment of parliamentary democracy.

According to Interfax, for the position was chosen by the former Prime Minister, Ambassador to great Britain Armen Sargsyan.

In remarks to parliament yesterday, Sarkissian said Armenian society has become more divided in recent years.

A physicist and mathematician by education, Sarkissian worked at the Cambridge University when he was appointed as newly independent Armenia's first ambassador to the United Kingdom in 1991.

Serzh Sargsyan is a former military officer who fought in the 1988-94 Nagorny-Karabakh War against fellow former Soviet republic-turned-arch-enemy Azerbaijan and previously served as prime minister from 2007-2008.
