It comes through the grapevine that Joaquin Phoenix is now in talks to become the crime prince of Gotham in the upcoming untitled Joker origin movie.

Variety reports that sources have confirmed "while studio negotiations are not yet underway, Phillips has made it clear that Phoenix is the top choice to star, ' and what's more, Joaquin has 'agreed" to the role. Warner Bros. continues to develop a solo movie for The Joker, Batman and comicdom's greatest villain. Hence, it goes without saying that, in the event that Phoenix really top-bills the upcoming project, Jared Leto will still be the Joker in the DCEU brand, including in the upcoming "Suicide Squad 2".

In addition to directing, Phillips will help write the script while film icon, Martin Scorsese, will serve as producer for the gritty film that will follow the character's life in Gotham City and his road to becoming the infamous supervillain.

According to Variety the origin film, that is yet to be named, will take place in the 1980s and show how the Joker came to be the criminal mastermind that he is.

It just means that Phoenix will take on the character's role in this particular movie, which will allegedly fall under a new banner of DC Comics that will broaden the studio's opportunities to branch out with side storylines not included in its cinematic universe.

The Joker film from Phillips is expected to be the first in this new offshoot series of films at DC and Warner Bros. that will serve as standalone movies telling their own stories that have nothing to do with the other projects in the works at the studio. Phoenix did, however, previously pass on playing both Lex Luthor in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and Disney-Marvel's Doctor Strange, so maybe there's hope after all. He was most recently seen in the Gus Van Sant film "He Won't Get Far on Foot".
