US Vice President Mike Pence, who was seated next to Moon, stared ahead as the ceremony unfolded.

The UN chief also extended his appreciation and pride to be at the Winter Olympics and highlighted the cooperation between UN and the International Olympic Committee (IOC), as well as the values for which the IOC and its sister organisation, the International Paralympic Committee, stand.

The colorful opening ceremony kicked off what will be the biggest Winter Olympic Games in history with more than 2,900 athletes from 92 countries competing. In a previous cyberattack, documents from Winter Olympics organizations were stolen and leaked by a campaign tied to Russian Federation, while North Korea has also been suspected of spying on the event's various organizations, a Wired report said. Both countries - and the United States - spent much of 2017 locked in a war of words because of North Korea's improving nuclear program and its provocative missile tests. So, too, did the problems of integrating the required minimum of three North Koreans on the squad in just a few days time.

Hundreds of Twitter users in recent days have referred to "Pyongyang2018", and while some were making a dig at the presence of North Korea at the Games, in many cases it appears to have been a simple mix-up.

At the Olympic Stadium's VIP box, Kim Yo Jong and North Korea's nominal head of state, Kim Yong Nam, took their place among world dignitaries including US Vice-President Mike Pence, who sat less than 1m away and seemed to make an effort not to acknowledge them. "At this time we can not confirm (a cyberattack)", he said.

On Friday, she told 41 Action News she felt troubled seeing the sister of Kim Jong Un a part of the opening ceremonies.

These officials said that while Pence did not greet Kim Yong Nam, he didn't deliberately skip over him.

"Marching together is really meaningful for her", Cho said.

Ms Kim, who is though to be about 30 years old, was promoted to the powerful politburo last year.

"She is a bit of a mystery figure", Madden said.

(During a New Year's Day speech, Kim Jong Un said "North and South must work together to alleviate the tensions and work together as a people of the same heritage to find peace and stability.") Kim added that he wanted North Korean athletes to participate in the Olympics.
