49ers players, others react to record-setting deal — Jimmy Garoppolo contract

While the team didn't release the terms of the contract, it's said to be worth $137.5 million over five seasons with $74 million in total guarantees.

So much for the NFL no longer being a quarterback league.

If Matthew Stafford and Derek Carr can break the bank, why not Garoppolo?

Even when the New England Patriots lose, Jimmy Garoppolo keeps on winning. It's a championship, and this roster has a ways to go before we put it in that conversation.

Jimmy Garoppolo has started just seven games in his National Football League career, but that was enough to earn him a record contract.

When the San Francisco 49ers fell to 1-10 after a 24-13 loss to the Seattle Seahawks on November 26, they made a decision to use the rest of the season to evaluate former Patriot Jimmy Garoppolo to see if he was their quarterback of the future. Garoppolo looks pretty excited in the photo. He's undefeated in those starts, which included changing the trajectory of the 49ers' franchise with his 5-0 finish to the 2017 season. They are the cornerstones of the Niners' quest to regain relevance, and their contracts reflect that. He's won every game he has started, but that's not many. The first day to do that would have been February 20. Cousins could not actually be traded under that scenario until he signed the franchise tag. We'll see. I think he wants to be with us and we want him there. The question is not so much whether the Vikings could fit a huge contract for Cousins under their cap, but whether they would want to invest that much into him as their franchise QB. Free agency kicks off on March 14 with the NFL Draft starting on April 26.

If the Browns are interested in Cousins, however, they will be facing competition from a number of teams, including (but not limited to) the New York Jets, Buffalo Bills, Denver Broncos, Minnesota Vikings and Arizona Cardinals.

Upon his arrival in San Francisco, Garoppolo made an immediate on the struggling team that had just one win before he arrived. Ryan is signed with the Atlanta Falcons through the 2018 season. Extensions are in order for both, and Rodgers, in particular, could be the one to push the salary record considerably, rather than incrementally, higher.
