British PM names new minister for Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland Secretary James Brokenshire has resigned from his position.

It comes as Prime Minister Theresa May plans a cabinet reshuffle.

Her appointment follows the resignation of James Brokenshire due to health reasons.

Efforts to restore the power-sharing administration in Northern Ireland and the impact of Brexit on the island of Ireland mean that the role is demanding and sensitive and Mr Brokenshire said he had hoped to lead the "essential work with renewed intent" before his diagnosis.

Despite studious efforts by Brokenshire to be seen as an honest broker, some of the parties said a deal by the DUP a year ago to prop up May's government made this impossible.

Brokenshire, who has led government efforts to restore the devolved Northern Irish executive after power sharing collapsed a year ago, was stepping down ahead of major surgery in coming weeks, his spokesman said. "It is critical that we get to work to seek a resolution now", said Mr. Eastwood. It's hard not to talk about James Brokenshire without sounding, at best, critical.

But his main concern now is his health, having surgery on a lung lesion and making a full recovery.

SDLP Leader Colum Eastwood MLA wished Mr Brokenshire well.

Conservative MP for Staffordshire Moorlands, Bradley has been secretary of state for digital, culture, media and sport since July 2016.

He said his decision to step down was the right thing to do. Even a writer for the Tory-friendly magazine The Spectator agrees, labelling his performance in the north as "hapless" and describing the 50-year-old as "out of his depth".

She wished him well with his surgery and said he "leaves the role with a very intimate knowledge of Northern Ireland and I look forward to working with him again in the future". We can not undergo the same discussions with a new Secretary of State only to arrive at the same barriers.
