A man was killed and a woman injured in an explosion on Sunday outside a metro station in Stockholm, Sweden, police said.

A woman aged 45 was also hurt, suffering facial injuries, police said.

"These two people cycled past the object and stopped to see what was on the ground".

Swedish national broadcaster SVT says a man has died after he picked up an unidentified object from the ground near a subway station in Stockholm that detonated in his hand.

Numerous illegal hand grenades found in Sweden are being imported from former Yugoslav nations, he said.

The Swedish tabloids Aftonbladet and Expressen claimed the device may have been a hand grenade but Olsson dismissed that as speculation. The man has been taken to hospital.

Police declined to confirm that report, for which the newspaper named no sources.

Police cordoned off the station and the square outside as bomb squad experts moved in to investigate.

There was no indication the couple were targeted, police said.
