At least eight people were injured in a fire raging through a Bronx building, the New York Fire Department said on Tuesday.

The blaze broke out in The Bronx, the same northern borough where last week's fire claimed 12 lives.

The fire started on the first floor of a building on Commonwealth Avenue and East Tremont Avenue in the Van Nest section just after 5:30 a.m. A firefighter was listed among the 19 people suffering minor injuries.

The building includes three floors of flats over retail spaces.

Another resident escaped with her two children and their dog.

"I woke up my husband, my kids and said listen there's a fire in the building", a woman who lived at the address told ABC7NY.

Dozens of firefighters are battling the blaze in the bitter cold.

At least 23 people are injured in a fire that breaks out in a building in the Bronx, New York City, on January 2, 2018.

"Our units arrived and were immediately faced with heavy fire".

The fire is believed to have started in the Beverly Hills Furniture store on the street level of the four-floor building.

"Praying for a swift recovery for all those injured", Mayor Bill de Blasio tweeted.
