TRACKING: Dangerous Wind Chills into the New Year

Northeast Kansas residents will ring in the New Year with dangerously low wind chills, the National Weather Service says.

"A Winter Storm Warning is in effect until 6 pm for western Grant and western Pendleton Counties". Wind will be in the from the northeast, about 10-15 miles per hour, so it will feel even colder than that.

Very cold wind chills are expected in the advisory area, and can cause frostbite to exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes.

Strengthening northwest winds will direct a surge of arctic-source cold into northern IL and northwest IN on Sunday night.

By early Monday morning, the temperature is expected to fall to about 23 degrees below zero, which would be the coldest New Year's Day on record in Pierre, according to the weather service.

Northwesterly winds pick up as we head towards midnight New Year's Eve, making it feel close to -25º at times. Expect wind chills to range from zero to 10 below zero. Hypothermia may also occur if precautions are not taken. In addition, consider bringing your pets indoors. Skies should clear partially on Monday night for some. The coldest times will be each night and morning from sunset on New Year's Eve through midday Tuesday.

Wed: Hi: 25 Lo: 3 Mostly sunny. Most overnight lows will be in the teens.

Wed: High: 32 Low: 13 Sunny.

Tonight: Partly cloudy. Wind chills from -10 to -20. We'll finally be around 10 on Wednesday for daytime highs.
