SCHOOL LUNCHES TO COST MORE
DID YOU
KNOW…
Prices
are still rising, and among the increases is the cost of
Canton school lunches, which are going up due to food and fuel
increases. Lunches in the elementary schools will jump from
$1.75 to $2.00; and at the middle school and high school, they
will climb from $2.00 to $2.25.
Snow and
ice removal was expensive this past winter, and MAC wasn’t
surprised to learn the town had to spend $248,898 more than what
was appropriated in the budget. The town also spent $114,000
more than what was budgeted for fuel costs and $30,000 more for
legal expenses.
The
number of foreclosures that has plagued the Massachusetts
real estate market slowed down a bit in June, but industry
experts say it’s still too soon to know if the worst of the
state’s foreclosure disaster is in the past.
On the other
hand, for the fifth time we’re pleased to see there will be
another “tax holiday” on the weekend of August 16-17 when
we won’t have to pay the 5 percent sales tax on most purchases
under $2,500; but we’ll still have to pay the tax on purchases
of boats, cars, meats, and tobacco products as well as
telecommunication services and gas, steam and electric
utilities.
MAC has
learned how cell phone users can save some money. Cell
phone companies generally charge $1.00 to $1.75 or more for all
411 information calls. So when you need to use the 411
information option, simply dial (800) free-411 or (800)
373-3411 without incurring any charge at all. MAC recommends
that you program it into your cell phone now.
What’s
happening to the American beer industry? Anheuser-Busch
will soon be taken over by a Belgian beer company; Miller
beer is now owned by a South African company; and Coors is
now half-owned by Canadians.

behind McDonald’s and Burger King, and operates 6,600
restaurants around the country.
Jon
Luther is the CEO of Canton-based Dunkin’ Brands Inc. The
company is the owner of the Dunkin’ Donuts and Baskin Robbins
fast food chains, which operate 14,000 stores in 44 countries
and generate $6.6 billion in sales each year. MAC’s
historical-minded readers will be interested to learn that
Dunkin’ Donuts was founded in Quincy in 1950.
The Stop
& Shop Supermarket Company will replace Canton’s Dunkin’ Donuts
outlets with Starbucks in as many as 130 Stop & Shop stores
this coming year. The decision was the result of a lawsuit filed
by Starbucks that threatened to abruptly close all 90 of its
shops in the supermarket’s chain.

The town has
received a bid of $47,000 for lighting at Sullivan field and a
$56,000 bid to light the Salah field. Both are new fields behind
the Kennedy Elementary School on Dedham Street, and the funds
for the lighting will come from the Barletta fields account.

It appears
we’ll be getting another fast food establishment in the downtown
business district. It will be operated in the now vacant
building at 563 Washington Street, which is at the corner
of Mechanic and Washington streets. Additionally, another
downtown restaurant will open at 521 Washington Street
where Rosario’s used to be located. The existing liquor
license at the location is being transferred to Cuculann

at “The Krazy Horse,” located at 1112 Washington Street in South
Norwood.
The
August 2

Club for the benefit of the late Ricky Shannon’s two children
was a great success, raising over $10,000. A big thank you goes
out to all who donated their money, time, or effort to this
worthy cause.

hold a public hearing on the application to demolish the Revere
