Canton High fall sports to start next week

Practices and tryouts for Canton High School fall sports will get underway next week, with athletes paying a considerably lower user fee than last season. As a result, CHS Athletic Director Danny Erickson said he expects an increase in participation this year, particularly with students who play more than one sport.

Despite Erickson’s best lobbying efforts, user fees had been on the rise in recent years due to ongoing budget constraints, and were expected to climb above $500 per sport before voters approved a $4.5 million operational override in May, effectively guaranteeing relief for at least the next three school years. School Superintendent John D’Auria initially recommended waiving the fee altogether, but the School Committee, on the advice of the Finance Committee, settled on a fee of $100 per sport for 2008-2009, with a family cap of $400.

Already, CHS football coach Jim Goff is reporting higher preliminary numbers for the football program, which is up from a year ago by as many as 40 players.

As for the coaching staff, only two vacancies remain, with all other head coaches returning from last year. Erickson is close to hiring a girls’ cross country coach and he is currently searching for a swimming coach to replace Jim Carta, who retired at the end of last season.

Erickson said he expects many teams to have successful seasons with very talented senior and junior classes.

The following are tentative first practice times:

Boys’ and girls’ cross country: August 21 at 9 a.m. at the CHS track

Field hockey: August 21, from 10 a.m. to noon at the turf field
