Close to 100
football players have expressed an interest in playing Canton
High football, almost 40 players more than a year ago.
Noting that
35 freshmen have signed up to play, the largest number in
several years, CHS head coach Jim Goff said he is excited about
the level of interest.
Goff will be
handing out equipment beginning Thursday, August 7 in the CHS
weight room. Seniors will be first beginning at 4 p.m., followed
by juniors at 4:30 p.m., sophomores at 5 p.m., and freshmen at
5:30 pm. Team captains will also be elected that day.
An optional
conditioning camp will be held from August 11-18 at Braintree
High School, and Goff has set August 18 as the first day of
practice.
Other
important dates include: August 23, first away scrimmage at
Archbishop Williams; August 30 at 10:30 a.m., first home
scrimmage against Hanover; September 5, Hockomock Jamboree
against Stoughton at 5 p.m. at the Ahern School in Foxboro.
The team’s
first game will be at home on Friday, September 12 against
Quincy, followed by an away game at Madison Park in Boston, on
Saturday, September 20 at 10 a.m.
CHS will
also host King Philip, Mansfield, Foxboro and North Attleboro
this season and will travel to Oliver Ames, Franklin, Sharon and
Stoughton.
With last
year’s squad depleted by graduation, the Bulldogs need several
starters, both on the offensive and defensive lines, Goff said,
adding that he has “three or four” candidates for starting
quarterback.
Goff said he
is very excited about the Canton running backs, with several
showing outstanding speed. Leading the group is Jordan Guyton,
who finished last season as the league’s second running back in
total yardage.
The football
program has a website with a link on the CHS athletic home
page.
