Among the eagerly anticipated summer events offered to Canton residents each year is the Canton Community Theatre’s annual musical extravaganza, and this year audiences will be captivated by the magic of one of the most adored musicals of all time — Rogers and Hammerstein’s The Sound of Music.

“This is a beloved show that appeals to audiences of all ages,” said CCT executive producer Kathy Fox Alfano. “We are fortunate to have a large cast — including nearly 80 Canton residents from age 6 to 81 who bring an incredible level of talent to the stage.”

Set in the Austrian Alps during the 1930s, The Sound of Music recounts the heroic escape of Naval Captain Geog Von Trapp, his seven children and their loving nanny Maria from the grasp of Nazi soldiers. David Larocque stars as Captain Von Trapp and Rebecca Pred-Sosa portrays Maria, who fall in love while Maria is taking leave from a mountainside Abbey to care for the captain’s children, played by Jessica Menice (Liesl), Dan Kazenel (Friedrich), Emmy Kuperschmid (Louisa), Abigail Perry (Brigitta), Matthew Gilmore (Kurt), Nicole Ryan (Marta) and Abigail Orkin (Gretl).

“It’s an extremely interesting and fun role,” said 13-year-old Kazenel on his portrayal of the eldest Von Trapp boy. “This is my fourth role with the [CCT].”

Dottie Shea, who stars as Mother Abbess and has starred in two previous CCT productions, said this year’s show is “truly a family affair.”

“My husband Vin plays Herr Zeller and my sons Conor and Jonathan are Nazi soldiers,” she said. “I was in A Christmas Carol with my older son Conor and Beauty and the Beast with Jonathan. I’ve always had a love of the theatre and this year we can share our common interest and creativity as a family.”

“It’s exciting for me because it has been such a wonderful play over the years and I simply love it,” said Marla Jenkins, who stars as Sister Margaretta. “This is a show that almost everyone knows and I’m having a lot of fun. Being involved in the theatre is a great way to meet new people in town, and everyone knows that music spreads love.”

Rounding out the lead cast are Ben Chambers as Rolf Gruber, Patty Willis as Baroness Elsa Schrader, Kevin Hayes as Max Detweiler, Carolyn Fortin as Sister Berthe, Millie McClintock as Sister Sophia, Lindsey McCue as Frau Schmidt and Corey Kleinbauer as Franz.

“One of our objectives has been to get young people involved in the production and technical aspects of our performances,” Fox Alfano said. “This summer we have several college-aged women from Canton who are taking a big part in this year’s production. All of them have been with us in past shows and some are pursuing theatre in college. Amanda Zane is our costume designer, Katrina Kessler is our stage manager, Alex Rich is assistant director and Danielle Clougher is our choreographer.”

Veteran behind-the-scenes expert is Barbara Carbone as technical advisor, Dave Coccia brings his melodious expertise as music director, Renee Hanscom and Krystyn Hanover are this year’s producers and David Lentendre is taking the reins as director.

Performances are Friday and Saturday, August 1 and 2 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, August 3 at 2 p.m. in Canton High School’s Morse Auditorium. Tickets are available at the door or for advanced purchase at Treasures 4 U at the Village Shoppes and are $15 each, $10 for students and seniors, or $40 for a family pack of four.

Fox Alfano said this year’s Sunday matinee includes a rousing sing-along, where audience members “will have a chance to join in on some of their favorite Rogers and Hammerstein melodies.”

Morse Auditorium is airconditioned and handicapped accessible. Fox Alfano said this year’s summer spectacular is on par with the high quality of the troupe’s past performances, and residents are in for a treat.

“We know the show will entertain everyone from children to senior citizens with some of the most recognizable songs in American musical theatre,” she said. “The Sound of Music has timeless appeal and we can guarantee the audiences will have as much fun watching the show as we have had bringing it to them.”
