OUR EXPENSIVE WATER
DID YOU
KNOW…
According to
the recent report of the Canton Water Department, Canton
uses 2.25+ million gallons of water each day and 100 percent of
it is supplied by the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA).
The town takes the MWRA water and distributes it to Canton
residents through 122 miles of water mains in a system that
consists of a network of pipes, valves, hydrants, service lines,
five large storage tanks, and two pump stations.
Of course,
buying all the MWRA water doesn’t come cheap. It was
recently announced that the MWRA is increasing its rates, and
Canton saw the highest increase among South Shore towns, an 8
percent increase in its combined water/sewer rate. Wouldn’t it
be nice if we could produce our own water?
Massachusetts home prices continued their steady decline in
May. It was reported that single-family home sales fell 13
percent from the same time a year ago, and the median price fell
8 percent to $322,000.
Tom
Healy may be a retired teacher, but he
is still Canton High’s baseball coach, and has been for the past
36 years. This season he recorded his 300th win.
Graduating Canton High School senior Alyse Rocco completed
her high school career as a long-distance runner by finishing
fourth among 13 of the top high school milers in the nation at
the Emerging Elite Mile Race held in North Carolina. She
finished with a time of 5:05.4, while the winning time was 4:59.
Alyse will be attending Brown University where she plans to run
indoor and outdoor track.
Brigham’s
Ice Cream, Inc. has sold its 28 restaurants to Deal Metrics,
LLC., of Baltimore, and, separately, sold the rights to its ice
cream brand and formulas to a subsidiary of HP Hood of
Lynnfield.
Residents of
Barnstable on Cape Cod recently got a surprise when a
4-year-old, three-foot alligator was found beneath a parked car
and captured. The mild-mannered reptile weighed in at 60 pounds,
and authorities believe it was probably an escaped pet. However,
it is illegal to own an alligator in Massachusetts, so it is
doubtful the owner will come forward.
A Randolph
woman recently pled guilty in Boston Federal Court to charges
she defrauded her Canton employer, Network Engines, Inc.
of over $100,000. She was charged with diverting $110,451 in
corporate funds to her private accounts between July 2005 and
June 2006.
Eagle
Scouts Thomas Powell and Liam Bergschneider have received
letters of commendation and proclamations from the selectmen,
thanking them for their public service projects at Pequitside
Farm, which saved the town an estimated $50,000.
Canton
firefighter/EMT Doug King recently became qualified as a
“midwife” when he delivered a baby girl while transporting her
expectant mother to Caritas Norwood Hospital. King, who is a
father of two himself, said, “It was the fastest delivery I’ve
ever seen,” and added, “It’s something you can’t stop.” Both
mother and daughter, as well as King, are reportedly doing
great.
It may
interest you to know that cyclists are legally entitled
to full use of a lane of traffic, as long as they allow faster
moving traffic to pass, and they often exercise that right on
roads with narrow shoulders.
The
proposed Bay State Greenway for recreational and commuting
cyclists will establish a statewide network of on and off road
facilities, including the Cape Cod Corridor, which will traverse
the South Shore through the towns of Canton, Milton,
Randolph, Avon, Holbrook, Abington, Brockton, East Bridgewater,
Halifax, Plympton, Kingston and Plymouth.
The Luk
Oil Company has purchased the Getty Gas, and the station at
1150 Washington St. will soon change its signs and brand of gas
to Luk.
Citing
growing diversity in Canton, School Superintendent John D’ Auria
has directed the 275 Canton teachers to read two books over
their summer vacations, which will help them integrate students
of color and those with different language and cultural
backgrounds into their schools, and the superintendent said
there will be follow-up discussions and staff training in the
fall on the subject. The program costs about $5,788 and was
funded by the Canton Alliance for Public Education.
The
Starbucks Corp. has announced that due to declining sales
and earnings, it will close 600 U.S. coffee shops over the next
nine months and eliminate as many as 12,000 full- and part-time
jobs. The company said the reductions amount to 7 percent of its
worldwide workforce, but Starbucks still intends to open 200
other company-owned stores through September 2009. It is not
yet known if the closings include the Starbucks at Cobb’s
Corner.
A happy
family is like a baseball team with Mom pitching, Dad catching,
the kids fielding, and everyone taking a turn at bat.
That this is all for now folks; see you next week.
