annual Prom Fashion Show

For the third
year in a row, the Canton chapter of the National Charity League
will sponsor the Prom Fashion Show. This year’s event will be
held on Thursday, February 12 at Canton High School, and will
again be a joint benefit between NCL and the Senior
Week/All-Night Graduation Party Committee.
NCL is a
nationwide service organization of 36,000 mothers and their
daughters in grades 7-12. The local NCL chapter has more than
100 members and participates in a variety of philanthropic
activities with organizations such as the Juvenile Diabetes
Research Foundation (JDRF) and Birthday Wishes, an organization
that organizes birthday parties for children in homeless
shelters. The local chapter holds monthly meetings for the
mothers and individual grade level meetings for the daughters on
a monthly basis as well.
The concept of
the Prom Fashion Show was developed by the charity league as an
event in which mothers and their daughters could help regardless
of their age, said Mary-Jo Hannigan, chair of the event, in an
interview last week. This year’s event will include
participation at every grade level: seventh and eighth graders
will work on posters and programs for the event, ninth graders
will organize the refreshments, 10th graders will
sell tickets and 11th and 12th graders
will model in the show.
Models for the
fashion show are juniors and seniors from Canton and Westwood.
The show will include 34 girls and 16 boys modeling formal wear
for prom season. The tuxes are provided by Richard Lewis in the
center of Canton while the prom gowns are provided by Dream Prom
and Social Occasions in Easton. The event will also be
photographed by John Souza.
Four high
school students will also act as the announcers for the show,
detailing the formal wear that each student is modeling.
Hannigan explained that each model filled out a questionnaire
that included basic questions such as the model’s age and future
plans, but also his or her favorite summer vacation, family
moment and song.
“The
information is a great way to add something personal to the
description of each model’s outfit,” Hannigan said.
Interest in
the event has increased each year, mostly through word of mouth,
and the number of models in this year’s show is about double the
number that the event has had in the past, Hannigan said.
Tickets for
the event are $5 for students and $7 for adults and can be
bought at the door.
